About Chart People

chicagodata.org, the COVID-19 dashboards and the charts behind them.

Chicago Data

Patrick Marcotte and Regina Maendler founded Chicago Data at chicagodata.org in 2015 through the Chicago Community Data Project.

The dashboards loaded records for a Chicago neighborhood and used browser-based filtering to update the charts. Visitors could select categories, combine filters and examine changes over time without changing the chart’s scale.

That approach became the basis for Chart People.

COVID-19 dashboards

Chart People added COVID-19 dashboards in March 2020, with county, state and world views. The historical project site remains online. It marks the world and US dashboards as no longer available.

The charts

Standard Celeration Charts use a logarithmic count scale and equally spaced calendar intervals. The frame stays fixed when the data are filtered.

Counts, missing observations and genuine zeros are kept distinct. The dashboard includes exact tables and source information alongside the charts.
